Retreats
The traditional form of intensive Korean meditation is known as Yong Maeng Jong Jin (YMJJ), which is often translated as “sitting like a tiger about to pounce” (Korean: literally strong, intensive sitting practice). A YMJJ can last two days, but also a week or longer.
YMJJ retreats are conducted in silence. Each day consists of approximately ten hours of Zen practice (bows, chanting, sitting meditation, and walking meditation), interspersed with work and rest periods, and vegetarian meals served in the traditional temple style. The retreat includes Dharma teachings and kongan interviews with a teacher (Zen Master or Dharma Master). Prior meditation experience or participation in an introductory class is recommended.
